Biography

Jack Ross is a Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer who has specialized in business litigation for over 42 years. His practice is focused helping businesses and professionals resolve significant business, financial, and probate disputes in the trial and appellate courts. His cases include partnership and corporate dissolutions and disputes, shareholder derivative actions, trust disputes, will contests, real estate disputes, landlord/tenant litigation, and collection of significant debts, in addition to other types of business and financial disputes.

After graduating from the University of Virginia, College of Law in 1978 he began his career in the commercial litigation department of the Richmond, Virginia, office of McGuire, Woods & Battle (now McGuire Woods, LLP). After moving to Florida, he served as the judicial law clerk for the Honorable Susan H Black, then a federal district judge for the Northern District of Florida. In 1980 he started his practice in Gainesville again specializing in business litigation. He practiced in the same office on University Avenue for over 28 years until joining Siegel Hughes & Ross in April, 2009.

Mr. Ross is an active member of the Florida Bar Association and an inactive member of the Virginia Bar Association. Mr. Ross also has an “AV” peer review rating, which is the highest rating available from the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory. He is admitted to practice before all Florida State Courts, the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Middle Districts of Florida, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Eleventh Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Jack grew up in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and went to college at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he graduated in 1971. After obtaining a Masters Degree in history from Duke University in 1972, Jack served three years in the U.S. Navy before attending law school at the University of Virginia. He earned membership in Phi Beta Kappa at UNC and the Order of the Coif at U.Va.

Jack has been married to his wife, Dorene, a professor at the University of Florida, for over 47 years. They have two daughters, both Gators. Jack supports his community by involvement in local charities, including, Kids Count of Alachua County and Stop! Children’s Cancer.

Representative Matters

  • Mr. Ross and Ms. Collins obtained a jury verdict for the owner of a commercial property whose tenant failed to pay rent and damaged the premises, removing air conditioning units and a commercial hood system. They also successfully defended against the tenant’s counterclaim seeking damages of over $300,000.00 for lost profits and overpayment of rent.
  • Mr. Siegel & Mr. Ross obtained a multi-million dollar jury verdict for a family member after the elderly and ailing parents were influenced by another family member to make dramatic changes to their lifelong estate plans. Mr. Ross authored an article on will contests and undue influence which was published in the Florida Bar Journal in 2019.
